Jacques d'Arthois, Extensive forest landscape with St. Stanislaus Kostka

On his way from Vienna to Rome, the saint first went to Dillingen to speak with Peter Canisius, an influential Jesuit. On that part of the trek he was guided by an angel, according Zetel (56-58). Several other images collected on Wikimedia Commons illustrated the same episode. Ubaldini (XIV, 303) does not mention the angel but does tell of a miracle by which Stanislaus crossed a seemingly impassible river, perhaps the river on the left in this painting.
